“Latin” Language Centre was founded in 1992 in Krasnodar and is now an official representative of Examination and Curriculum Council “RELOD” (Moscow) in the south of Russia, Krasnodar Territory. It is the mission of “Latin” LC to carry out educational programmes and training in foreign languages. As a regional examination center “Latin” LC administers examinations in ESOL Pitman Qualifications/ City&Guilds, which were introduced in Krasnodar in 2001. The number of applicants has since been constantly increasing.
The Centre’s goals are being achieved in three different directions.
1. Our Language School offers quality programmes and courses to meet the specific needs and objectives of non-speakers of English, German, French, Italian. This activity is licenced by the Department of Education and Science of Krasnodar Territory (reg. № K036955).
As the ESOL syllabus is offered at five levels – Basic, Elementary, Intermediate, Higher-Intermediate, Advanced, we have followed the same standards and designed the complete course of studies including six levels, from Beginners to Advanced to provide better access to the international certification of language acquisition.
The purpose of the Language School is to work with students in non-traditional educational settings such as individualized instruction or smail groups.
Curriculum is established with skills and knowledge standards tailored to fit each student’s needs. Teachers are responsible for designing a sequential curriculum and students should demonstrate a mastery of each unit before proceeding to the next. The school must be able to help students realize diverse educational goals that include one or all the following:
· Basic communicative skills in English or some other foreign language;
· Improvement of students’ foreign language proficiency level for purposes of employment, career education, personal enrichment and advancement in their chosen occupation.
A number have found that attendance on a course provides highly useful preparation for international examinations or for a forthcoming programme of study at a British college or university.
“Latin” Language School is based in Krasnodar and has subdivisions in Severskaya and Novopokrovskaya settlements in Krasnodar Territory.
Duration
Course programmes are held over a period of three months each (120 hours of classroom studies). A timetable is sent to participants on enrolment.
On fulfilling a level course each student sits a preliminary ESOL Pitman Qualification test. The number of those who apply for our courses exceeds 300 people a year.
Special primary courses are designed for children under 7.
2. Teacher training and promoting modern methods of teaching foreign languages.
In 2002 “Latin” LC signed an agreement with Municipal Teacher Training Centre (Krasnodar) on providing assistance and training in methods of teaching to teachers of schools, colleges and higher education establishments of Krasnodar who wish to use modern courses of language teaching methods offered by Oxford University Press. During the academic year the Teacher Training School operates at our Centre. More than 500 teachers and trainee teachers have attended our seminars over a period of three years. Two-hour seminars are held every second Saturday of the month. They are free to those teachers of foreign languages who buy one or more sets of books published by OUP. It is possible to organize module seminars (15-35 academic hours) on preparing students for international examinations of various formats and modern forms of final testing as well as to conduct preliminary testing of students and teachers in accordance with the format of Pitman Qualifications Examinations and administer international Pitman Qualifications Examinations. The Ministry of Education of Russia recommends (with the agreement of the school teachers council) international ESOL Pitman Qualifications/City&Guilds examinations as final achievement examinations of students’ choice (Letter from the Ministry of Education of Russia № 494/13-13, 04/07/01).
3. Being a local OUP ELT representative, we are in permanent contact with teachers of 20 secondary schools, 4 colleges and 2 universities of Krasnodar and the Kuban region and will be pleased to give our customers specific advice about levels and how they relate to their teaching situation. They can buy quality books and resources on methods of teaching foreign languages published by OUP and Cambridge that enable all teachers to implement best practice effectively and with confidence.
We are looking forward to further cooperation and establishing new mutually beneficial relations.
